What is MCS certification?
MCS is the standards scheme for small-scale renewable technologies in the UK, and it covers two things: products and installers. Certified products have been assessed against product standards. Certified installers have been assessed against installation standards and are audited against them. When a solar installation is completed by a certified installer using certified products, it is registered and an MCS certificate is issued for that specific system at that specific address. That certificate is the document an electricity supplier may ask to see before offering a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
The two strands of the scheme
It helps to think of MCS as two parallel lists.
Products. Panels, inverters and other components are certified against the relevant standards. A product being certified says nothing about whether it suits your roof — it says the product has been assessed.
Installers. Companies are certified against the installation standards for the technologies they are approved for. Certification is not a one-off exam: it involves an initial assessment and continuing surveillance, including inspection of completed work.
Both strands have to line up. Certified panels installed by an uncertified contractor produce no MCS certificate. A certified installer using uncertified equipment has the same problem.
What the installation standards actually cover
The standards go well beyond the electrical connection. In practice they touch:
- System design. Sizing against the property and the consumption, shading assessment, and a documented performance estimate produced by the defined method rather than invented.
- Structural considerations. Whether the roof can take the array and the loads it imposes.
- Mounting and weathering. Fixings into structure, correct flashing and weathering details, and a roof that is left watertight.
- Electrical work. Isolation, protection, earthing, labelling, testing and certification.
- Handover. Documentation, commissioning records, and the customer receiving what they need to operate and maintain the system.
That last point is more significant than it sounds. A large share of the complaints about solar installations are documentation and handover failures rather than equipment failures.
Why it matters for export
To qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, the system must have been installed by an MCS certified installer using certified products, and suppliers may ask for the MCS certificate as evidence. This is the single most practical reason MCS matters to a household: without the certificate, the route to a paid export tariff closes.
It also matters at resale. A solar array without its paperwork is a question mark on a property. A conveyancer will ask what it is, who fitted it, whether it was notified and whether it is certified. Having the MCS certificate, the electrical certification and the DNO paperwork in one pack turns a long enquiry into a short one.
What MCS is not
It is worth being precise about the limits.
MCS is not a guarantee of workmanship on your particular job, and it is not an insurance policy. It is not a substitute for the electrical certification, which is a separate document under a separate regime. It does not replace the DNO notification or approval — those are network requirements under G98 and G99 and run independently.
Nor does certification mean every certified installer works to the same standard in practice. It means they have been assessed against a common set of requirements and are subject to audit. The variation that remains is why references, completed work you can actually look at, and a properly detailed quotation still matter.
Questions worth asking an installer
- Are you MCS certified for solar PV, and for battery storage if storage is included?
- Under what certification body, and what is the registration number?
- Will the installation be registered and an MCS certificate issued in my name?
- Is the performance estimate in the quotation produced by the MCS method?
- What documentation do I receive at handover, and when?
A certified installer will answer all five without hesitation. An evasive answer to any of them is a signal.
Keeping the paperwork
At handover you should end up with the MCS certificate, the Electrical Installation Certificate, the DNO notification or approval, manufacturer warranty registrations in your name, the system design and performance estimate, and the commissioning records.
Store them together, digitally as well as on paper. You will want them when you apply for an export tariff, when you add storage later, when something needs a warranty claim, and when you sell the house.

Common questions
Is MCS a legal requirement?
It is not a licence to trade. It is a certification scheme, and it is the route to the Smart Export Guarantee — suppliers may ask for the MCS certificate as evidence that the system was installed by a certified installer using certified products.
What is the difference between MCS-certified products and an MCS-certified installer?
They are separate strands of the same scheme. Products are certified against product standards; installers are certified against installation standards and audited. You need both for a compliant installation — certified panels fitted by an uncertified installer do not produce an MCS certificate.
Where does my MCS certificate come from?
The installer registers the commissioned installation and the certificate is issued against that registration. Keep it: it is the document an export supplier will ask for, and it is the one buyers and conveyancers look for when a house is sold.
Does MCS cover the roof work as well as the electrical work?
The installation standards cover the system as installed, including mounting and weathering, not just the electrical connection. Structural and weathering failures are exactly the sort of thing an audit looks at.
