Warranty details

Oxford is the most designated place we work. Conservation areas cover a very large proportion of the city, views of the historic skyline are protected, and there are more listed buildings per square mile than anywhere else in our coverage.

The practical consequence is that Oxford projects start with a designation check, not a roof measurement. Once that is established, the work divides between the dense Victorian terraces of Jericho, East Oxford and Cowley — narrow roofs, slate, no rear access — and the interwar and post-war suburbs out towards Headington, Marston and Botley, which are conventional.

What we install in Oxford

What we find on Oxford roofs

The order of work in Oxford is: check the designation, then measure the roof, then talk about panels. Doing it the other way round wastes everybody's time, because the designation frequently decides the elevation and the elevation decides the system size.

On the terraces, the honest constraint is width. A narrow rear slope with a valley and a soil vent pipe can end up taking six or seven panels, and no amount of specification improves that. Where that is the case we say so, and the conversation turns to whether a smaller array plus storage still makes sense — often it does.

What affects the price in Oxford

Controlled parking and terraced access mean scaffolding and delivery need arranging in advance, and that arrangement has a cost.

Where an application is required, the consent stage adds time rather than a large fee — but a project should be planned around it.

Solar questions we get asked in Oxford

Can I put solar on a terraced house in East Oxford?

Frequently yes, on the rear slope. The constraints are the designation, the width of the usable roof, the slate covering and the fact that there is usually no rear access, so scaffold and materials go through the house. All of that is manageable — it just needs planning rather than improvising.

How long does consent take if my property is in a conservation area?

Where an application is needed, allow a couple of months, and longer where listed building consent is also required. We will tell you at survey whether your scheme is likely to be permitted development or an application, so you can plan realistically.
