Tadley sits on the north Hampshire border with Berkshire, between Basingstoke and Newbury and a few minutes from Burghfield. It is close enough to our base that we are there regularly rather than occasionally.
Two of the case studies on this site are Tadley installations, and they are usefully different from each other: one a compact array on clay tile, the other a raised array across a flat roof with storage in a plant room. Between them they cover most of what the town has asked of us.
What we find on Tadley roofs
Clay tile is common here and it is the covering that most rewards doing properly. On our Tadley clay-tile job we used a Renusol system with 24 Renusol 420150 hooks, chosen so the tile above beds back down over the hook rather than sitting proud. Get the hook profile wrong on clay and the roof tells you about it years later, usually in the winter.
Flat roofs turn up more often than people expect, on extensions and on whole properties. Our other Tadley installation put twelve panels on raised frames across a flat roof, worked around existing walls and rooflights. On a flat roof the roof itself is the easy part — the decisions are row spacing, so the front row does not shade the row behind it through the winter, and how the frame is held down without compromising the membrane.
The other thing Tadley throws up is distance. Properties here often have outbuildings, plant rooms and long footprints, which means the incoming supply and the sensible place to put an inverter are not always near each other. On the flat-roof job that meant roughly 33 metres of armoured cable running the length of the building to a 60A fused switch. That is not a problem, but it is a cost, and it is the sort of thing that should appear in a quotation rather than on the invoice.
Beyond that, the housing stock in Tadley is mixed rather than uniform. We would rather look at your roof than generalise about the town.

"Ben from SolarFX and his team have done a great job for us. Kept us in the loop at all stages, and Ben has been really supportive following the install with support, set up and managing the new system. During the recent sunny period our average cost per day for electricity was 60p. Would strongly recommend SolarFX."

- Solar panel maintenanceScheduled servicing of the whole system — array, fixings, DC side, inverter and monitoring — not just the glass.
Two Tadley installations we have documented
- A compact 3.6kWp AIKO array on clay tileEight AIKO 445W Gen 2 panels on a Renusol system with 24 roof hooks, a 3.7kW inverter and an Emlite generation meter. Estimated 3,028 kWh a year.
- Flat-roof solar with FOX ESS storageTwelve 430W Canadian Solar panels raised across a flat roof, 5kW FOX ESS inverter and battery in the plant room, 33m armoured run to the supply.
What affects the price in Tadley
The roof covering. Clay tile is slower to work than concrete interlocking tile, because each hook has to be placed rather than approximated and the tiles are easier to break. That time shows up in the price and it is time well spent.
The distance between the incoming supply and where the equipment should live. A short run in a garage costs very little. Thirty-odd metres of armoured cable down the length of a building is a real line item.
Whether there is a dedicated space — a plant room, a garage, a workshop — for the inverter and any storage. Where there is, the installation is tidier and easier to service. Where there is not, siting becomes a design question.
Scaffold and access. Flat roofs, awkward elevations and restricted frontages all change what the scaffold costs before a single panel goes up.
We put all of this in a fixed quotation. If something is going to add cost, we would rather establish it at survey than discover it on the day.
Technology worth understanding first
- Hybrid invertersA single unit managing array, battery and house demand, and when fitting one is worth the extra cost.
- Mounting systemsHooks, rails, clamps and fixings — the part of the installation that decides whether the roof stays watertight.
- N-type and TOPCon panelsThe cell technology behind the current generation of high-output modules, and what it changes in practice.
Guides for Tadley property types
What homeowners in Tadley ask us first
Do you actually work in Tadley, or is this just a page? We have two documented installations in the town, both with photographs and full specifications, linked above. The RG26 area is a routine run for us rather than a special trip.
Will you break my clay tiles? Some breakage is a risk on any clay roof and anyone who promises otherwise is guessing. What we control is the hook choice and how carefully the tiles are lifted and re-bedded. We carry replacements where the tile is a standard pattern and we tell you at survey if yours is not.
Can I put solar on a flat roof? Yes, and we have done it in Tadley. It needs a frame designed for wind loading, sensible row spacing and a fixing method that suits the membrane underneath. It is a structural question before it is a solar one.
Do I need planning permission? Domestic solar is usually permitted development, but flat-roof arrays and listed or conservation-area properties have their own conditions. We check for your specific property rather than assuming.
How long does it take? A straightforward domestic array is typically a couple of days on site. Adding storage, a long supply run or a flat-roof frame extends that. Your quotation will say which applies.
