Winchester combines a historic, heavily designated core with substantial modern housing on the surrounding slopes and villages. The two need entirely different approaches.
In the older city the constraints are conservation designation, listed status and visibility. On the edges — Badger Farm, Stanmore, Harestock and the villages out towards Kings Worthy — it is conventional twentieth-century housing and the design problems are ordinary ones.

What we find on Winchester roofs
- Flint, brick and clay tile period property needs careful fixing and, often, a conversation about aesthetics before technical design.
- Conservation area coverage is extensive in the city; designation must be checked per address.
- The city sits in a valley, so surrounding higher ground and mature trees create genuine shading on some properties.
- Village properties around Winchester frequently have outbuildings better suited to an array than the house itself.
Winchester splits our work almost exactly in two, and the two halves need different conversations. In the designated city the first question is what the planning position is, and the second is what the roof will look like from the street — which pushes towards flush in-roof mounting, all-black modules and a layout set square to the ridge.
Out at Badger Farm, Stanmore, Harestock and the Worthy villages the constraints are ordinary: orientation, chimney shading and the state of the existing board. Those jobs are priced and programmed like any other.
The valley setting is the one thing people underestimate. Winchester sits low with higher ground on both sides, and a property on the wrong side of a slope can lose a meaningful part of the winter day. It is the reason we assess shading across the year rather than on the afternoon we happen to visit.
What affects the price in Winchester
In the designated city, expect the specification to cost more: in-roof mounting, all-black modules and a slower, more careful roof programme.
On the city edges and in the villages, pricing is conventional and driven by system size, access and the state of the existing installation.

How an installation in Winchester runs
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Enquiry | You tell us the postcode, the property and roughly what you spend on electricity. |
| 2. Remote design | An indicative design and proposal based on the roof, your usage and your objectives. |
| 3. Site survey | Roof, structure, electrics, access and shading assessed in person. |
| 4. Final design and fixed quotation | A written specification and a fixed price before anything is ordered. |
| 5. Permissions and DNO | Any consent required, plus the G98 notification or G99 application. |
| 6. Installation | Scaffolding, roof works, electrical works and commissioning. |
| 7. Handover | Certification, monitoring setup, warranty registration and export tariff support. |
Many domestic installations are completed in one to three days once scaffolding is in place, although the actual duration depends on system size, roof type, access, electrical works and whether a battery is included. Read the full process.

Technology worth understanding first
- Power optimisersPer-panel DC electronics that keep conversion in one accessible box: the middle option between string and micro.
- MicroinvertersOne inverter per panel mounted on the roof: what per-panel conversion buys, and what it costs.
- Mounting systemsHooks, rails, clamps and fixings — the part of the installation that decides whether the roof stays watertight.
- All-black panelsPanels with black frames, black backsheets and concealed busbars, and what the appearance costs in output and in price.
Guides for Winchester property types
- New build homesRetrofitting or extending solar on a new build — structural warranty notification, shallow pitches, interrupted roof planes and covenants.
- Listed buildings and conservation areasWhere permitted development rights are reduced or removed, listed building consent is a separate process, and design choices decide the outcome.
- Tile roofsConcrete interlocking, clay pantile and plain tile — the most common covering we work on, and the most forgiving.
Solar questions we get asked in Winchester
Does Winchester's conservation designation cover my street?
It covers a large part of the older city but by no means all of it, and the boundaries are not intuitive. We check the designation for your exact address as the first step, because it determines whether we are designing a permitted development scheme or preparing an application.
Will panels look wrong on a flint and brick house?
They can, if specified carelessly. All-black panels with black frames, a tidy layout set square to the roof and concealed fixings make a substantial difference on period property. Where the roof is prominent, in-roof mounting is worth pricing.
