Caversham sits north of the Thames and climbs steadily away from it, which gives the area two quite different characters. Near the river and around Caversham Court the housing is older and denser, with conservation designations in places. Further up towards Emmer Green it opens into interwar and post-war semis and detached houses with larger plots.
The trees are the defining local factor. Caversham is a green suburb, and a great many properties have something mature to the south or south-west.

What we find on Caversham roofs
- Conservation area designation applies in parts of Caversham, particularly near the river. Roof solar is frequently still achievable, but the designation has to be checked before design, and elevations fronting a highway are treated differently.
- Mature tree shading is the most common design constraint here. It moves through the year, so a summer assessment can flatter a roof that struggles in winter.
- Older properties near the river include some with slate and some with plain clay tile, both of which need more care and better fixings than concrete interlocking.
- The hill gives many Emmer Green properties an unobstructed southern aspect, which is about as good as Reading gets.

For the larger Edwardian and interwar houses on the hill, roof area is rarely the constraint — shading and aesthetics are. That tends to push designs towards optimisers, careful string separation and all-black panels rather than towards squeezing on the maximum panel count.
