Wokingham divides neatly into three for solar purposes. The historic centre is tight, older and partly designated, the interwar and post-war suburbs around it are conventional and straightforward, and the recent strategic developments at Montague Park, Arborfield Green and Shinfield have introduced thousands of new homes with modern electrics and shallow-pitched roofs.
The last of those is where most of our Wokingham work now comes from, and it brings a specific set of considerations: estate management covenants, restricted roof planes and, on some plots, roofs that face awkwardly because the street layout mattered more than solar orientation when the site was laid out.

"Ben from SolarFX and his team have done a great job for us. Kept us in the loop at all stages, and Ben has been really supportive following the install with support, set up and managing the new system. During the recent sunny period our average cost per day for electricity was 60p. Would strongly recommend SolarFX."

EV charger installation in Wokingham
We fit home EV charge points across Wokingham and Berkshire, as a standalone job or alongside solar panels and a battery. We cover RG40, RG41 and the surrounding streets.
- Load assessment firstWe check your main fuse, consumer unit and demand, and add load management where the supply needs it.
- Safe earthing, every timePEN fault protection or a dedicated earth, established at survey rather than assumed.
- Charge from your own solarWith solar and a battery, a solar-aware charger fills the car from your roof instead of the grid.
- Smart, app-controlledCompliant smart charging with off-peak schedules, so you charge when electricity is cheapest.
What we find on Wokingham roofs
- New-build roofs often have shallow pitches and interrupted planes, which reduces usable area more than the footprint suggests.
- Estate and management company covenants occasionally restrict external alterations — worth confirming before a quotation is accepted, not after.
- The older town centre includes conservation designation; permitted development rights are reduced there.
- Modern consumer units on the newer estates make battery integration and EV charger installation simpler than on older housing.
The commercial question in Wokingham is usually whether to size for the roof or for the household. On the new estates, roof area is the binding constraint, so the design tends towards higher-efficiency panels to get more out of a limited plane. On the older suburban stock the roof is rarely the limit and the interesting decision is how much storage to pair with it.
Wokingham also has a high proportion of households with an electric car, which changes the arithmetic. A charger set to draw from surplus generation turns midday production into miles rather than into a low-value export.

- Battery storage installationHome battery systems sized against your consumption, sited properly and commissioned with the tariff in mind.

- EV charger installationHome charge points installed with a proper load assessment, PEN fault protection and solar-aware scheduling.
- Battery retrofitAdding storage to a solar system that is already on the roof, without disturbing what works.
- Solar panel maintenanceScheduled servicing of the whole system — array, fixings, DC side, inverter and monitoring — not just the glass.
What affects the price in Wokingham
On the newer estates the cost drivers are the roof plane and the covenant paperwork rather than the electrics, which are modern and rarely need touching.
In the older town the variables are scaffolding on tighter streets and the state of an existing consumer unit.

How an installation in Wokingham runs
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Enquiry | You tell us the postcode, the property and roughly what you spend on electricity. |
| 2. Remote design | An indicative design and proposal based on the roof, your usage and your objectives. |
| 3. Site survey | Roof, structure, electrics, access and shading assessed in person. |
| 4. Final design and fixed quotation | A written specification and a fixed price before anything is ordered. |
| 5. Permissions and DNO | Any consent required, plus the G98 notification or G99 application. |
| 6. Installation | Scaffolding, roof works, electrical works and commissioning. |
| 7. Handover | Certification, monitoring setup, warranty registration and export tariff support. |
Many domestic installations are completed in one to three days once scaffolding is in place, although the actual duration depends on system size, roof type, access, electrical works and whether a battery is included. Read the full process.

Technology worth understanding first
- Power optimisersPer-panel DC electronics that keep conversion in one accessible box: the middle option between string and micro.
- MicroinvertersOne inverter per panel mounted on the roof: what per-panel conversion buys, and what it costs.
- Mounting systemsHooks, rails, clamps and fixings — the part of the installation that decides whether the roof stays watertight.
- All-black panelsPanels with black frames, black backsheets and concealed busbars, and what the appearance costs in output and in price.
Guides for Wokingham property types
- 1930s semi-detached homesThe classic suburban semi — hipped or gabled roof, party wall stack, bay window and a side elevation that changes everything.
- 1920 to 1965 homesInterwar and early post-war housing: hipped roofs, clay and early concrete tile, central chimneys and modest incoming supplies.
- Post-1965 homesTrussed rafter roofs, concrete interlocking tile and modern electrics — the most straightforward housing stock to work on.
- New build homesRetrofitting or extending solar on a new build — structural warranty notification, shallow pitches, interrupted roof planes and covenants.
What homeowners in Wokingham ask us first
I live on one of the new Wokingham estates. Does the developer warranty affect solar?
It can. Where a property is still within a new-build structural warranty period, roof penetrations may need to be notified or carried out to a particular standard to avoid affecting cover. We check this before work starts and document the fixings and weathering either way.
My roof is quite shallow — is that a problem?
Shallow pitches are workable but they change the numbers. A low pitch flattens the seasonal curve, gives slightly less winter output and slightly more midsummer, and it makes self-cleaning less effective so panels stay dirtier for longer. It is a design input rather than a reason not to proceed.
